Who are our translators and interpreters?

To ensure we meet the required industry standards, at ABC Multilingua we engage services of contract interpreters and translators who are credentialed by NAATI where possible.
NAATI is the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters, the Australian standards and certifying body for people working in the translating and interpreting profession. It sets and maintains high national standards for the translating and interpreting sector, and it is the only organisation to issue credentials or certification to people who wish to work in this profession.
NAATI’s Certification System has been designed to evaluate if a candidate demonstrates the skills needed to practice as a translator or interpreter in Australia. Certification gives assurance to people who engage interpreters or translators, that English and non-English speakers can interact effectively with each other.
Certification places emphasis on training, English proficiency, ethical and intercultural competency, and ongoing professional development and work practice. The Certification System has been designed after considering the knowledge, skills and attributes identified as necessary for professional practice.
There are five categories of interpreter credentials available through the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters:
-Recognised Practising Interpreter
-Certified Interpreter
-Certified Specialist Health or Legal Interpreter
-Certified Conference Interpreter
For translators, NAATI’s certification system consists of two categories:
-Recognised Practising Translator
-Certified Translator
Before sitting a certification test, practitioners must meet certain prerequisite requirements set by NAATI, which vary depending on the certification, but will include completing formal training in translation or interpreting, demonstrating English proficiency, demonstrating ethical competency, and demonstrating intercultural competency.
Some ABC Multilingua translators and interpreters, however, hold none of the credentials outlined above. This occurs in very low demand languages and languages of new and emerging communities where NAATI testing is not available. These professionals undergo ABC Multilingua interview and reference checking processes to ensure their work is of a high standard.
All of our translators and interpreters, nonetheless, are bound by the strict rules of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct, which, in summary, obliges practitioners to maintain professional detachment, impartiality, objectivity and confidentiality, strive for excellence through continuous regular professional development, decline work beyond their competence, promote working conditions, relationships and an understanding of roles that facilitate collaboration and quality service delivery, and adhere to dispute resolution processes.
